Want a 3D effect in you photo? Here's how

The process
To start with open the image that needs to be OOBed.
Step 1: Right click on the background image, select “duplicate” and click on “OK”. Switch off the first layer's visibility by clicking on the Eye icon next to it in the layers palette.
Select the newly created background copy and click on the 'Add layer mask' icon. Once done you should be able to see a white box beside the main image.
Click on 'Create a new layer' at the bottom of the 'Layers' palette. Select the new layer and choose the rectangular marquee tool. Now create a box by keeping the left mouse button pressed and dragging the cursor.
Step 2: Switch to the paint bucket tool and make sure that the foreground color is set to white. Now place the paint bucket tool in the selection area and click. The box should now look like the image shown below.

Step 3: Now click on 'Select | Modify | Contract', change the setting to “35” and click on “OK”. Now hit “Delete” on the keyboard. You should be able to see a white bordered frame. Now, click on 'Select | Deselect' (removes the "marching ants" selection indicator).
Step 4: To change the perspective of the frame you will need to adjust it to a certain angle. To do that that click on 'Edit | Transform | Distort'. Click and drag the edge of the frame to give it a definitive perspective. Press [Ctrl] [S] and select 'Apply' to save the file.
Step 5: Click on 'Add Layer Mask' to mask the already selected layer. Select the newly created layer and choose the brush tool. Change the size to 40 and set the foreground color to black. Now paint over the area that needs to be erased. If needed, zoom in by using the mouse wheel while keeping the [Alt] key pressed. Remember: a black foreground will erase and a white foreground will do just the reverse.
Step 6: Add another new layer by clicking on the 'Create new layer' icon and reposition it just above your original image. Click on the paint bucket tool and keep the left mouse button pressed to select the gradient tool. Right click on the gradient editor and select a gradient with colors that will suit your picture. You can also adjust the gradient level by dragging the sliders across. Now, hold down your left mouse button and drag it horizontally across your screen to create the gradient effect.
Step 7: Select the pen tool and make a path along the frame. Keep in mind that to need to make the selection path along the subject if you want to achieve the OOB effect. Use the [Ctrl] and [Alt] keys to make fine adjustments when using the pen tool. Switch to the [Paths] palette and double click the work path to save it. Now press [Ctrl] [Shift] [I] to select the inverse of the path.
Select the bucket tool while making sure that the foreground color is set to black. Click anywhere on the image to highlight only the image selected while removing the rest. Press [Ctrl] [D] to deselect the path once done.
Step 8: Right click on the image and select 'Blending options'. Choose 'Drop Shadow' and change the 'Distance' to 79 and 'Size' to 98. Now adjust to the angle that best suits your need. Click on 'OK' when done.
If you want to crop your image select the rectangular marquee tool again and select the area that needs to be cropped. Go to the 'Image' menu and click on 'Crop'. Save the file by clicking on 'File | Save as...', give a suitable name to the image and change the format to JPEG or any other of your choice. You can now decide on the overall file size and quality of the image by adjusting the image quality slider. Click on 'OK' to save the image. There! Your first OOB photograph is now ready.

Now that you've got the hang of it go ahead and see which other picture can be OOBed. Just about any picture can be jazzed up with this effect. All you need is a little bit of imagination and creativity to make it work!

Create your own bootable USB pen drive in 4 steps

There are a number of ways in which to create your own bootable pen drive but we are going to show you the easiest way. To begin with you will need a PC with a CD/DVD ROM drive, the Windows CD/DVD, and a 2GB pen drive if you are creating a Windows XP bootable USB or a 4GB pen drive if the requirement is for Windows Vista/7.

Create your own bootable USB pen drive in 4 steps

Create your own bootable USB pen drive in just four easy steps.

Netbooks have made their mark in the PC segment and are here to stay. What makes them worth the buy is the unquestionable portability that they offer over their laptop counterparts. They are small, light and are definitely easy to lug around. They might not have the processing power to execute intensive tasks but will easily handle office applications. Moreover some of them are even capable of playing high definition video which makes them decent all rounders. That said, these little entertainment boxes have one major drawback in them: the exclusion of an optical drive. No doubt that files can be transferred via pen drives but what if the need arises to reinstall the Operating System in case of a system crash or if the requirement is to install the new Windows 7? What then? Would you spend money on a new external DVD-RW or would you prefer upgrading or re-installing via a pen drive? Well, for most of us the obvious choice would be the pen drive.

To start with, download and extract the program WinToFlash. Once extracted execute the file called WinToFlash and follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Click the 'Windows Setup transfer wizard' and select 'Next'.

Step 2: Here you will need to define two paths where the 'Windows File Path' points to the location of the Windows installation disk and the 'USB Drive' specifies the location of pen drive that hat will be used for creating the bootable installation routine. Click on 'Select' and choose an appropriate path for both.

Step 3: Accept the 'Windows License Agreement' and click on continue.

Step 4: Dont panic! The 'Warning' is just to remind you that the pen drive will be formatted before proceeding. Click 'OK' to proceed or 'Cancel' in case you inserted the wrong pen drive or want to check it.

Thats all that needs to be done to be able to create a bootable Windows installation pen drive. To be able to boot from the pendrive you will need to access the BIOS and change the boot priority to 'Removable disk'. If the settings are right you will be able to boot and proceed with the installation of Windows.

Hide your entire hard drive

Here is a very simple three-step workshop which illustrates how you can hide your data from prying eyes by just hiding an entire drive or partition in My Computer

Hide your entire hard drive
Here is a very simple three-step workshop which illustrates how you can hide your data from prying eyes by just hiding an entire drive or partition in My Computer.

What do you do when loads of data on your computer needs to be cleverly hidden away from inquisitive family members or office colleagues? Software such as folder lockers, encryption utilities and others do a decent job, but is a costly method and leaves traces. We will show you a simple trick with which you can hide your data easily from others.

This trick is very simple works against casual snoopers, but will not prevent a skilled spy from finding it! To do it, all you need is a separate partition to store all the data you want to hide.

Step 1: Create an additional partition and format it. Windows Vista and 7 users can use the Shrink Space option from the Disk Management Utility to create a new volume without repartitioning the hard drive. Windows XP or older users can use third party partition manager utilities to create a new partition.

If you already have an additional partition or drive, then you can skip this part. Once you have created the partition, format it and transfer all your data to this new drive.

Step 2: Now lets assume that you have your sensitive data on drive D and want to prevent it from showing up in the Windows Explorer. To do this you need to start the Group Policy Editor utility. Click Start | Run and type Gpedit.msc and press [Enter]. Here scroll down to User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Explorer on the left pane. Double-click on the Hide these specified drives in My Computer on the right pane. In the following window, select Enabled and choose the D drive from the drop down list under Options. Apply the settings and exit.

Step 3: The drive letter D is now hidden from Windows Explorer. In order to access this drive in future, all you need is to enter D: in the Start | Run... dialog box nor in the address bar of Windows Explorer. Your drive will be accessible for your work since only you know it exists.

Note: This is not a fool-proof method and the hidden drive can even be targeted by viruses. Also, remember that this is not an encrypted partition. The lists of recently opened files in each program can also expose the hidden drive's existence. Use a utility such as Ccleaner or Window Washer to wipe out these tracks.

FIX DAMAGED HEADPHONES

Here is a small guide to help you fix your favorite headphones, which might have been damaged due to wire stretching or audio jack issues.

Whether you’re an audiophile or somebody who listens to music on-the-go, your headphones may stop working or work only partially over prolonged use. We’ve put together a simple guide on how to get those headphones up and running once again.

Firstly, you’ll require a soldering iron, some solder wire and another pair headphones which you don't intend to use. The reason we would require another pair of headphones or earphones is to make use of the wires and the connector in case your expensive headphones have a bad wire or connector, thus needing replacement. Needless to say, other tools like screwdrivers, wire strippers and a sharp blade or knife will definitely come in handy. So once you’ve collected the materials required, get your favorite pair of headphones ready and start with finding the cause of the faulty connection.

Fault Identification
Identify the area of the fault. If there’s a break in the wire, it’s best to replace the whole wire from your headphones with a new one or taken from another pair. In case there are problems at the connector end, the solution is to cut the wire, buy another connector (most electronic shops sell it for less than ten rupees) and solder the wires to the new connector. Thirdly, in most cases, sound is audible over only one side of the headphones as the soldering wears off with time or the wires have given way. Due to this, the functionality of the headphones is drastically reduced, but with a few simple methods mentioned below, you’ll get the sound back from both channels in no time.

For our workshop, we took our faulty ‘Koss Porta Pro’ headphones and upon diagnosis, realized that the fault lay at the point where the cable met the headphone driver. But here’s the important bit of information you need to keep in mind - you need to identify the smartest possible way of prying your headphones open. In most cases, the drivers are concealed in a frame, which is either glued together, fused as one piece, have clamps or simply screwed together. Therefore, we would suggest that you carefully examine the headphones and the wiring before attempting to open them. In case you find the drivers are fused inside a case, you might need to cut open the frame. If needed, get some help from someone who knows a bit of electronics.
On our Koss headphones, we found that it had a small plastic cap covering the audio driver’s connectors that needed to be flipped apart with a screwdriver. A few have the second channel routed through the head band and hence, there will be a bit more of opening up required to get to the soldering bit. For others, there are separate wires entering both the drivers on either side and the task will be a little easier. Some in-ear headphones do have a strong adhesive hold and trying to take them apart might just break the internals or the case itself. Hence, it’s better to be careful while handling such headphones.

Disassembling the Headphones
Once you’ve gotten into the inside of the headphones, check if the existing wire has come loose. If it has, a simple soldering might just do the trick. In our case, it seemed like the wire had worn out over time, so we decided to change the wire completely. Here is where we needed the other pair of unused headphones for transplanting its wires to the Koss set.
Cut out the older worn out wires and discard them. Do note the polarities of the wires before cutting them as you might need to restore it later using the new wires. Headphone manufacturers sometimes make a marking on the terminals with either ‘+’ or ‘-‘ signs, or simply mark them with two colors. Usually, headphones don’t need wiring polarity as a compulsory connection and hence you can safely connect any polarity to any end of the headphones.
Now take the wires from the other headphone. Using a wire stripper, cutter or a plain knife, strip the wire sleeve by around half an inch to reveal the two internal wires. Here is the part you need to be very careful about: headphones use a very delicate pair of wire cores. While some have a mesh of 10 to 20 strands for each wire, others might have a single strand only.

Soldering the Wires
These strands of wires are always coated with a layer of lacquer to prevent a short circuit. This lacquer needs to be scraped off before soldering it to the terminal. To do this, use a very sharp blade or knife and very carefully and delicately scrape off the lacquer from the wire strands. If you apply too much pressure, the wire will break and you will end up with a shorter wire. Once that is done, coat the scraped ends with solder. This process is called tinning of copper.
Once you're done, it is time to solder the wires to the terminals, but do this carefully as the last thing you want is your plastic casing to melt away. If you are not confident with soldering process, we would advise taking help from someone who knows this job. It would be safer than realizing later that you destroyed your expensive headphones.

Process Reversal
Now that you have soldered the wires to the drivers, it is time to check if the music’s back on before re-assembling the headphones. If it works, you can now reverse the opening technique you used on the headphones to put them back into their original state.
If you cannot hear any audio from the speakers even though you have done proper soldering, it is time for fault finding. If you know how to use a multi-meter, it is time to bring it in use here. Check the connectivity between the main audio jack and the driver’s terminals to check if the wire and the soldering is a perfect joint. You might have to check the drivers too. If the driver itself is faulty, you might just need to discard the headphones completely as repairing a driver is next to impossible, unless an expert looks into the matter.
